Book to screen adaptations to get excited about in 2022
From literary classics to modern book club favourites, we can't wait to see these book adaptations arrive in cinemas and TV screens in 2022. 

Conversations With Friends

After the success of 2020’s Normal People, Sally Rooney’s debut novel Conversations With Friends is set for a TV adaptation. Joe Alwyn (The Favourite), Jemima Kirke (Girls, Sex Education), Sasha Lane (American Honey) and newcomer Alison Oliver have been cast in the 12-episode series.

Normal People’s director Lenny Abrahamson will be taking on the new TV series, with British screenwriter Alice Birch and Rooney herself handling the script. The show has been filming in Ireland and is set to be released sometime in 2022.

Where The Crawdads Sing

The queen of literary adaptations, Reese Witherspoon, is producing the Where The Crawdads Sing movie adaptation, with Normal People’s Daisey Edgar-Jones cast in the lead role as Kya.

Newcomers Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson have been cast as the two male leads, playing Tate Walker and Chase Andrews, respectively.

Filming on the Where The Crawdads Sing movie wrapped in July 2021, with the film set for a release date of 24 June 2022.

Cyrano

Based on the 1897 play by Edmond Rostand, Cyrano is a musical romantic drama that tells the story of talented writer and swordsman Cyrano de Bergerac who is secretly in love with his dear friend Roxanne.

Directed by Joe Wright and with original music written by The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Cyrano stars Peter Dinklage in the titular role, along with Haley Bennet, Kelvin Harrison Jr and Ben Mendelsohn.

The film will be released in the US on 21 January 2022, with international release to follow.

Deep Water

Patricia Highsmith’s psychological thriller’s Deep Water is getting the Hollywood treatment, with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas starring as the leads in the movie. The story follows a couple in a loveless marriage and the film adaptation is slated for a 14 January 2022 release.

She Said

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star in this true story about the New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey who broke the Harvey Weinstein story. The film is early on in production, with Patricia Clarkson, Andre Braugher, Samantha Morton and Adam Shapiro in the cast, set for a release date of 28 November 2022.

Death On The Nile

Detective Poirot is back in the second film adaptation of the Agathe Christie series, following 2017’s Murder On The Orient Express. Kenneth Branagh is reprising his role as the French detective, with Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening, Rose Leslie and Russell Brand starring in the ensemble.

The Death On The Nile film is scheduled for release on 10 February 2022.

The Nightingale

Real-life sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning play French sisters Vianne and Isabelle in this sweeping tale based on the book by Kristin Hannah. The Nightingale is set in Nazi-occupied France during WWII and is set to be released on 23 December 2022.

Persuasion

Jane Austen fans will be delighted to hear a new adaptation is in the works, this time following the story of Anne Elliot in Persuasion. The film stars Dakota Johnson as the lead, along with Henry Golding, Suki Waterhouse and Richard E Grant is expected to be released in 2022 (date TBC).
