If you’ve ever given passing consideration to applying fake tan, you’ll have heard of Bondi Sands.
The Australian tanning brand has taken the world by storm since it was first established in 2012, offering easy to use products in a range of different formats.
Bondi Sands extensive range promises to create a realistic-looking tan without the sun. Each product generally relies on dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with dead skin cells in the surface layer of skin to deepen your skin-tone temporarily for a number of days.
When exposure to UV rays seriously ups the risk of skin damage and skin cancers it’s no surprise more of us are embracing a faux glow.
Created by Aussie entrepreneurs Shaun Wilson and Blair James, the brand has burgeoned in the years since launch.
Wilson told Sydney Morning Herald the brand’s initial launch was hindered when its first batch of products turned customers green.
“It was not the greatest start,” co-founder Shaun Wilson says. “The quality control of one of the ingredients was not up to scratch and we had to do a recall. ”
It may have been the catalyst to fine- tune each product, because the brand is now known for being able to create a realistic tanned tone on skin.
However one tanning product doesn’t always fit-all, and it has long been acknowledged that those with very fair or deep skin tones have been missing out with products currently available. In particular, many people with more melanin in their skin benefit from the way self tanning products can even out and enhance skin’s tone and leave it looking hydrated and glowy, but products designed specifically are few and far between.
With its just-launched Technocolour range, Bondi Sands is hoping to address the shortfall and provide better options for all skin tones.
The brand says the range is made up of four tanning products created with carefully considered tanning active ingredients, electrolyte hydration and colour enhancers that provide a more customised look for different skin tones. Each comes in a 1 Hour Express Foam format that can be washed off after one hour of wear to achieve the prefect colour. The plus side is, you don’t have to wear it overnight so washed off, it wont stain your clothes or sheets.
“In a world of me-too products Technocolour is a true innovation for the self-tanning category, developed from a world-first skin study to understand how different skin tones react to and process self tanning active ingredients,” explains Blair James.
“For decades self-tanning brands have been creating and marketing products for 30% of beauty consumers. Technocolour is a unique range of self tanning foams with tailored levels of self tanning ingredients, moisturisers and tone enhancers to cater for all skin tones and the desired result of every self tanning consumer.”
The four options are:
- Technocolor Sapphire has been developed specifically for those with fairer skin tones and blends low-level tanning active ingredients with blue-grey colour enhancers to provide optimal results for those with fair skin tones and leave a natural, cool toned tan.
- Technocolor Emerald has been developed specifically for those with medium skin tones and blends mid-level tanning active ingredients with green colour enhancers to provide optimal results for those with medium toned skin and leave a deep, olive toned tan.
- Technocolor Magenta has been developed specifically for those with olive to deep skin tones and blends high-level tanning active ingredients with red-violet colour enhancers to provide optimal results for those with olive to deep skin tones and leave a rich, deep toned tan.
- Technocolor Caramel has been developed specifically for those with deep skin tone and blends low-level tanning active ingredients with yellow-golden colour enhancers to provide optimal results for those with deep skin tones and leave a warm, golden toned glow.
To achieve products that work for the widest range of skin tones, the products are said to have been tested on thousands of participants. This was to to determine the most natural results based on skin function and its ability to process DHA whilst maintaining hydration and longevity of colour.
