Icelandic Star’s museum retrospective transports attendees between a real and imagined world

Idiosyncratic singer Bjork has never shied away from pushing the boundaries of her artistic expression. Following on from two decades of adventurous musical experimentation and bold fashion statements, comes her first foray into the art world.

The exhibition showcases the singer and composer’s multifaceted work providing a multisensory feast, that Bjork herself has characterised as a “journey”.

Attendees are invited to enter into Bjork’s ethereal world via a rabbit warren of small rooms displaying quintessential costumes, deeply personal, some say jarring diaries and her famous album covers.

Presenting collaborations with fashion icons such as Alexander McQueen whose voluminous bell dress appears in the “Who Is It? ” video and Spike Jonze’s retrotastic “It’s Oh So Quiet” have sparked a 90’s nostalgia.

Accompanying the visual displays is a musical soundtrack derived from her eight full-length albums, that determines the flow of moving between the rooms.

The avant-garde artist’s involvement in the show has courted controversy, with reviewers questioning the singer’s tight control over her image and legacy.

The show offers only one brand-new piece – a 10-minute video visualizing the song “Black Lake” off Bjork’s latest album, “Vulnicura” that chronicles her breakup with her longtime lover, the acclaimed artist-world Matthew Barney.
