Sydneysiders are spoilt for choice when it comes to outstanding bakeries, whether they are seeking something savoury or a sweet pastry that looks almost too good to eat. These are six of the best.

Baker Bleu

Baker Bleu.

Yummy fermented sourdough, buttery pastries, delicious sandwiches (try the chicken and avo – it’s jam packed); you will be wanting to come back for more. Neil Perry and family have breathed life into a rather dowdy part of Double Bay and now everyone is raving about it all, including this bakery at 2 Guilfoyle Avenue, Double Bay, lined up alongside uber-successful Margret’s, Next Door and Song Bird.

Humble

Humble Bakery & Cafe.

What? You haven’t tried Australia’s best Finger Bun, leave immediately and head to Holt Street Surry Hills now. It’s the buttery pink icing and the delicious fruity bun for us. We may have tried a few in our lunch hour, but truth be told when they first were made, all those fingers ago, those finger buns were bigger and fruitier. Still, this place also has great sandwiches. Mortadella & Salami Focaccia is a favourite – watch the oil run down your arm.

Tuga

Tuga Pastries Bakery.

Try the Custard Tarts, which are made by hand every day – they are just delicious. Portuguese sourdough bread and a range of pastries make it worth the trek down Clovelly Road to join the queue of locals – you will not be disappointed. Bestever almond croissants this side of the bridge.

Shadow Baking

Founded by three Messina head chefs, the must try is the Vegemite scroll with cheddar, smashed avo, fermented chilli egg jam and pecorino. Find it at Darlinghurst, 243 Victoria Street where it’s open until sold out and Marrickville in the Gelato Messina HQ carpark on weekends (open from 7.30am.)

A.P Bakery

A.P Bakery Sydney.

Located on the second floor of the Paramount House rooftop in Surry Hills, it feels a little Hollywood arriving by elevator. Great bread, sourdough baguettes, fermented potato buns, mixed grain loaves and pizza bread, scrolls and croissants. Every visiting TikToker wants their moment on the rooftop holding a baked good. Feels a little ‘lights, camera, action’ as the staff trot around like extras on a movie lot, but the bread is excellent, and that’s what you’re there for.

Son of a Baker

Son of a Baker.

Customers can watch through a large glass window as ownerbaker Roman Urosevski and his team craft an array of treats, from chocolate batons with raspberry and chocolate hazelnut smear, to breakfast bacon and egg sandwiches served on croissant bread. Inspired by his father, who introduced him to baking at the age of eight, Urosevski describes the bakery as a blend of his father’s legacy and his own creative vision. The pastries are made with coconut oil instead of butter, making them veganfriendly.

Plus: A few of our favourite Sydney sandwich spots

The Potts Point Italian deli Salumerie serves up sandwiches on home-made focaccia from the counter with fillings like prosciutto di Parma, Calabrain salami, prosciutto cotto and eggplant parmigiana with buffalo mozzarella, transporting you back to that time on holiday in Italy. Bravo!

South Dowling Sandwiches.

South Dowling Sandwiches specialises in enormous sandwiches! The Jimmy, The Hugo, The Biatch, The Daniel, The Justin, The Brad Pitt, The Banter or The Vegan Van Gogh – no matter what you order, they are something else and like nothing you’ve tried before. Did we mention they are enormous?

Cut Lunch Deli on Clovelly Road is all bright, clean and sparkly with sandwiches like the Schnitz, Morty D, Falafel, and Sun Kissed. Be warned, the sandwiches are so delicious you’ll want to head back and order again for tomorrow’s lunch as well.

S’wich in Bondi has lots of choice when it comes to what sort of bread you’d like and whether you would like a melt or just fresh bread, and has loads of interesting combos. Bugz Bunny is perfect for the vegan palette, Cali Turk serves delicious oven-roasted turkey breast and Croque le Dijon melt with double smoked ham makes eating at the beach that much more fun with sandwiches. Once you’ve tried all the flavours, S’wich also lets you create your own.
