Conrad Combrink still remembers the exact moment everything changed. More than three decades ago, the-now Senior Vice President of Expeditions at Silversea Cruises found himself on his first true expedition voyage. What began as curiosity quickly became a lifelong calling. “It only took a few days,” he once said. “I was completely hooked.”
Today, Combrink is one of the leading figures shaping the future of luxury expedition travel, but his philosophy remains grounded in a simple idea: experience is everything.
“We are very intentional with both classic and expedition cruising to deliver an extraordinary experience onboard and in the destinations,” he says. “You can’t have one without the other. You can have great service, menus and butlers, but if you get the destination wrong, the entire experience is lost.”
That balance between refined luxury and raw, immersive discovery is what defines Silversea. Guests might enjoy white-glove service and fine dining onboard, but they are equally drawn to the unpredictable magic of the destinations themselves. “It’s all about the guest experience. The resources we have, the colleagues we collaborate with across the wider company, guests can feel that dedication. It really is incredible.”

Being part of a larger global cruise group has strengthened Silversea’s expedition capabilities. “In my role, expeditions have so many moving parts,” he says. “We have learned so much. We have access to shared services and experts every day, and that support is invaluable to my team.”
Embracing the unexpected
Expedition cruising is never without its challenges. Unlike traditional itineraries, these journeys unfold in environments where conditions can shift rapidly.
“Whatever is happening in the world, geopolitically or weather-wise, we plan carefully to avoid issues,” he says. “But in expedition cruising, especially in polar regions, so much is out of our control. That’s why we always have a Plan B. It’s built into our planning cycle, and we can pivot very quickly when needed.” Guests, he notes, not only understand this, they embrace it. The unpredictability becomes part of the adventure.
Looking ahead, Silversea continues to push boundaries with new and returning destinations. One region close to Combrink’s heart is the Federated States of Micronesia, a remote collection of more than 600 islands in the western Pacific. “We haven’t travelled there since 2015,” he says. “It’s an extraordinary part of the world rich in coral reefs, rainforests and maritime culture.”
These voyages are carefully curated, often spanning vast regions from Fiji through Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, up to Micronesia, Guam and Japan, and onward through the Philippines, Borneo and Indonesia before reaching the Kimberley. Each itinerary is designed with intention and depth.
Intentional cruise design
“We work with smaller groups, and it’s all about how we deliver the destination,” says Combrink. “We don’t buy experiences off the shelf. My team spends a huge amount of time scouting locations, researching, and building something truly unique.”
That commitment opens doors to places many travellers would otherwise never reach. “Parts of West Africa, for example, are difficult to access, but when you integrate them into a Silversea voyage, suddenly they become possible,” he says. “People travel with a company they trust. They know we’ve done our homework.” As he says, “It’s about our crew, crew, crew.”
It’s this trust and the expertise behind it that sets Silversea apart. Its Expedition teams include specialists ranging from marine biologists to cultural experts.
In Japan, for instance, guests might find themselves guided through forest meditation by local experts. “It’s very cool,” Combrink adds with a smile.
His passion for exploration hasn’t faded. If anything, it has deepened. Because for Combrink, expedition cruising is not just about where you go, it’s about how it makes you feel when you get there.
