Beat the heat: The best face mists to hydrate and calm your complexion
More than just water in a spray bottle, many dedicated face mists can do wonders for your skin.

More than just water in a spray bottle, many dedicated face mists can do wonders for your skin. They also provide a refreshing reprieve from the heat, hormonal hot flushes, post-workout redness or just tired and tight skin.

So why is seeking out a special one any better than a quick spritz from the houseplant mister? It’s all about the ingredients.

For added hydration that will stick around, rather than just evaporate off the surface of skin, a useful face mist should at the very least have a humectant that binds moisture to the skin a bit like a sponge, most often glycerin or hyaluronic acid.

Of course mists won’t provide the longer-lasting benefits of a proper skincare routine or the likes of serums and moisturisers, and shouldn’t be used as a replacement, more a mid-afternoon top up, when a full-face freshen-up or further application of moisturiser isn’t possible.

According to experts, they can also be used after cleansing at night to prime the skin, and are believed to assist serum and moisturiser absorb more efficiently.

That’s not all they do though. Many contain soothing ingredients that help calm skin and take down sensitivity and redness while more advanced – and yes, expensive – options now offer everything from barrier-boosting ceramides, to antioxidants like Vitamin C and E that protect from environmental pollution.

When makeup has been on your skin for a few hours and starts looking cakey and settling in lines, a few pumps of a mist can help revive it, leaving your face looking fresh without removing and reapplying.

Top contenders for the season: Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner; Dermalogica Ultracalming MistJosh Rosebrook Hydrating Accelerator; Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Hydrating Miracle Mist; Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist.
