Banksy reveals new artwork and shares powerful message about racism

As Black Lives Matter protests continue across the world, elusive street artist Banksy has joined other prominent figures in speaking up about systemic racism and white supremacy.

Banksy reveals new artwork and shares powerful message about racism

Unveiling a new piece of artwork of Instagram, Banksy spoke up about the “white system” that harms people of colour.

“At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about this issue,” his statement reads. “But why would I do that? It’s no their problem. It’s mine.”

The piece depicts a vigil with flowers and a framed picture below an American flag. A candle sits below the flag, with its flames burning and spreading upwards.

“People of colour are being failed by the system. The white system. Like a broken pipe flooding the apartment of the people living downstairs,” his statement continues.

“This faulty system is making their life a misery, but it’s not their job to fix it. They can’t – no-one will let them in the apartment upstairs.”

He finishes with a call for white people to take responsibility. “This is a white problem. And if white people don’t fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in.”

The artist also shared a sketch of protestors in Bristol tearing down the statue of slave trader, Edward Colston.

In his caption accompanying the piece, he suggests the statue be replaced with “some life size bronze statues of protestors in the act of pulling him down.”
