Australia’s oldest man knits adorable mini sweaters for penguins
109-year-old Australian Alfred Date is a keen knitter – in fact, he’s been creating beautiful hand-knitted goods since the 1930s.
So when Victoria’s Phillip Island Penguin Foundation were calling for volunteers back in 2013 to knit mini sweaters for rare ‘little penguins’, Alfie (as he’s affectionately known as) was happy to pitch in.
The knitted penguin jumpers are vital in saving smaller penguins who are affected by oil pollution.
A father of seven, grandfather of 20 and a keen golfer (he played until he was 90), Alfie’s secret to long life is, “Waking up every morning”.
No doubt a healthy sense of humour has also contributed to his longevity.

The sweaters are gorgeous and makes me so proud to know someone at the age of 109 can still knit.
Bless you and your efforts Alfred Date
I wonder if they know how stylish they look?!
