Australia’s death toll from COVID-19 climbs to 11
Two men have died from COVID-19 in Victoria, bringing the death toll in Australia to 11.

The men were aged in their 70s and died overnight.

The deaths are the first from the novel coronavirus for Victoria.

There are 54 new cases of COVID-19 in Victoria, bringing the total in the state to 520.

It comes not long after a ninth death was announced in Australia, with a 68-year-old man from Queensland dying on Wednesday afternoon.

The man from Toowoomba had a serious underlying medical health condition before contracting the virus, according to Queensland Health.

There are more than 2600 cases of COVID-19 in Australia. Stage two lockdown is now in place across the country.

It’s likely NSW, the ACT and Victoria will bring in even tougher lockdown measures in the coming days.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said her state “will have to go further” in enforcing social distancing if the latest lockdown measures do not result in a shift in case numbers.

“If things haven’t shifted because of the actions we took earlier in the week, and actions which I’m very pleased we took at that time, we will have to go further,” she said.

“And I just want everyone to be prepared for that, not to be overly concerned or panicked, but just to know that the NSW government will go further if we have to, because it’s in the interests of public safety.”
