The move comes as a surprise to many, as Anna Wintour is known to be very precious about her coveted title. However, reports say it was negotiated as a key part of Beyonce’s contract.
In true Queen B style, she’s using her power for good, giving a 23-year-old black photographer, Tyler Michell, the opportunity to take her picture for the issue.
In more shocking news, he is the first photographer of colour to shoot a Vogue cover, especially given the magazine is 126 years old and first featured colour photos on it’s cover in 1932. Beyonce’s move is hopefully one that will tip the balance, going forward.
Along with controlling the magazine cover, Beyonce’s contract also states that she is to select the photos of her inside the magazine. She is also writing her own captions in long form, according to a Huffington Post report.
The mother-of-three has appeared on Vogue’s September issue cover once before, shot by Mario Testino in 2015. But this is the first time she’s ever had total control over the cover shoot.
