The famed actress struggled to hold back the tears, clasping her chest as she said her goodbyes to her 18-year-old boy at Seoul’s Yonsei University.
Maddox is off to study biochemistry at the renowned university, which is one of South Korea’s top research institutions.
The farewell drew a crowd of star-struck parents and students, with one onlooker asking how long the actress would be in town for.
“I leave today, today is the day that I drop him off.
“I know, I’m trying not to cry.
“Yes it’s time, thank you very much, it seems like a great school,” an emotional Jolie said.
American student Richard Choi pounced on the opportunity to grab a “40-second conversation” with the Oscar-winning actress, posting it to YouTube.
“She knows there aren’t [many] students from America,” he says afterwards.
“So right after I told her I’m from Minnesota, she was glad to see another person from America.”
There was no sign of father Brad Pitt as Maddox was dropped off – the pair have endured a strained relationship over the years.
In 2018, Jolie had to fight to keep primary custody of the six children she has to ex-husband Pitt, including Maddox who is their eldest.
