Allbirds Unveil Bold New Collaboration with Chinatown Market

Allbirds is stepping into the realm of LA streetwear with their imaginative new collaboration.

2020 seems to be the year of collaboration for Allbirds. In a bold follow up to their partnership with Adidas, the eco-conscious brand have joined forces with LA streetwear brand Chinatown Market and boundary-pushing designer Nicole McLaughlin with a new collection of upcycled pieces.

Made from Allbirds’ scrap materials, McLaughlin has designed five works of art for Chinatown Market, diverting materials from waste and reimagining them in eccentric new pieces.

The creations include Chinatown vest stitched together with leftover shoe material, a houndstooth purse and brightly-coloured sliders made with merino wool.

The pieces will be auctioned off on 7 August, with 100% of the proceeds going towards black-trans charity, The Okra Project, and climate action organisation, Sunrise Movement.

The creative team behind the project say they hope the partnership will inspire young designers “to challenge the confines of their creative consciousness – to consider not only the final product, but the material journey taken to get there.”

The collaboration doesn’t stop there. Allbirds and Chinatown Market are offering up tools and insights for the next generation of creatives in an aim to inspire sustainable design throughout the industry.

In late winter, they’ll be launching an IGTV series, where renowned creatives will lead digital workshops around sustainable design and DIY methods.

At the end of the series, up-and-coming creatives will be handpicked for a digital mentorship with the Allbirds and Chinatown Market teams, letting them go behind the scenes and into the minds of streetwear and sustainable fashion’s biggest players.

Keep an eye out on Chinatown Market’s website for the auction on 7 August.
