In partnership with Tūhura Otago Museum, The Stargazer transforms the historic Dunedin Railways Taieri Gorge train into an immersive astronomy adventure. This winter, you can experience this special journey for two nights only on Thursday 19 or Friday 27 June.
Astrotourism is on the rise in Aotearoa, New Zealand. With low light pollution and wide-open spaces, the South Island offers some of the best stargazing on Earth. New Zealand is even home to two of the world’s 22 Dark Sky Reserves and three Dark Sky Sanctuaries. Dunedin’s winter night skies are especially vivid in winter, with places like Hoopers Inlet becoming hot spots for viewing the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights).
Dunedin Railways realised that their historic railway line provides access to another great stargazing spot. Tucked away from the city, the Taieri Gorge offers a quiet, sheltered night sky with low levels of light pollution. Perfect for stargazing.
The Stargazer departs at 6.30pm from the iconic Dunedin Railway Station. Passengers will enjoy a gourmet meal as the train travels away from the city lights and into the night. The destination: Hindon, a small stop in the heart of the Gorge. There, under open skies, astronomers from the Dunedin Astronomical Society will guide you between state-of-the-art telescopes. Discover distant galaxies, spot sparkling stars and admire the night sky. Museum Science Communicators will also lead interactive activities that bring the science of space to life. Ask any burning questions, or simply stand under the stars with a cup of hot chocolate, and take it all in.
“The Stargazer isn’t just a train ride—it’s an experience that brings together science, adventure and southern hospitality,” says Rebekah Jenkins, General Manager of Dunedin Railways.
Whether you love astronomy or are looking for a magical winter night out, The Stargazer offers a new way to explore Dunedin’s scenic wonders.
