Looking for a new furry companion? With Pet Adoption Day on February 9, it’s the perfect time to add to your household!

According to PetRescue, around 200,000 pets remain unclaimed in Australian pounds each year, with about half of those needing to be euthanised. However, the good news is that the number of rescue pets being adopted is growing nationally each year, as more people decide to choose a rescue pet rather than buying from breeders.

This Saturday, fur babies big and small including dogs, cats and rabbits will descend upon PETstock stores across Australia, all hopefully seeking a ‘forever’ home.

PetRescue co-founder Vickie Davy said it can pay to remember that “not all cute fluffy dogs are great with kids, and overlooking a big boofy dog (who loves children and naps) may mean you miss out on the perfect family dog. From couch potatoes to fitness fanatics, there’s a pet to suit every lifestyle. National Pet Adoption Day is a fantastic opportunity to find your perfect match.”

She said there were many advantages to adopting a pet:

  • Most rescue pets are already house-trained;
  • Adopting an older animal often means they are more mellow;
  • Abandoned pets often have plenty of love and gratitude for their new owners;
  • It’s cost-effective as most rescue pets have been vet checked, vaccinated, desexed, wormed and flea-treated;
  • You are saving a life.

Pet ownership also has many proven health benefits for the two-legged members of the household, including lower levels of stress and anxiety, reduced risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, improved mood and help with loneliness and depression.

As animal behaviourist, Dr Kate Mornement says, “Pets that may not have had a great start to life can become wonderful companions. With some love and guidance, their personalities shine.”
