Adele shows off colourful ‘carnival’ look in new photo

The 32-year-old singer took to Instagram to celebrate Notting Hill Carnival, which has moved to a virtual event this year due to the pandemic.

“Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London,” captioned the singer, sporting a pair of tights, a Jamaican-flag bikini top and a Bantu knots hairstyle.

The first Notting Hill Carnival began in 1966, founded by activist Rhaune Laslett. The carnival’s organisers say the activist’s vision was to celebrate Carribean culture and encourage interracial tolerance and integration on the diverse community.

Some people have criticised the singer for wearing the traditional African hairstyle. Journalist Ernest Owens called out the singer’s latest look as cultural appropriation.

“If 2020 couldn’t get any more bizarre, Adele is giving us Bantu knots and cultural appropriation that nobody asked for. This officially marks all of the top white women in pop as problematic. Hate to see it.” Owens tweeted.
