Considered one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso influenced and was influenced by many notable artists of his time, including Salvador Dalí, Valentine Hugo, Henri Matisse and Gertrude Stein.
The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, titled The Picasso Century, is making its world-premiere on 10 June, showcasing works by the seminal artist and his contemporaries.
The NGV Picasso exhibition will feature over 70 works by Picasso, and 100 works by 60 other artists, giving audiences the opportunity to discover famous Picasso works alongside other artists rarely exhibited in Australia, including Natalia Goncharova, Julio González, Wifredo Lam, Suzanne Valadon and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva.
Curated Didier Ottinger from the Musée national d’art moderne in Paris, the exhibition “examines the diverse influences, encounters and collaborative relationships that steered Picasso through many distinct artistic periods, such as his Blue Period, Cubism and Surrealism, and draws lines between Picasso’s famous creations and the world around him.”
NGV Director Tony Ellwood AM says the world-first exhibition offers visitors an extraordinary insight into the development of modern art and the preeminent figure at its centre. “Through more than 170 works of art – including many that have never been seen in Australia – audiences will come to appreciate the many ways in which Picasso influenced – and was influenced by – the artistic community that surrounded him.”
The Picasso Century exhibition at NGV opens on 10 June 2022. Visit ngv.vic.gov.au for more details.
