The story is set for its third adaptation, with the Mean Girls Broadway musical to be made into a film.
Tina Fey, who wrote the original movie and the musical’s book, is on board for the project to write the script again.
It will feature the show’s hit songs with music by Fey’s husband Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Legally Blonde’s Nell Benjamin.
“I’m very excited to bring Mean Girls back to the big screen,” Fey said in a statement, according to EW.
“It’s been incredibly gratifying to see how much the movie and the musical have meant to audiences. I’ve spent 16 years with these characters now. They are my Marvel Universe and I love them dearly.”
The Broadway smash was nominated for 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
It largely follows the same plot as the film, with Cady Heron working her way in with popular girls The Plastics at her new high school, after moving from Africa to suburban Chicago.
