Billy and Jimmy Breland recently reached an impressive milestone: their 60th wedding anniversary. Soon after the celebrations, Billie, a public school teacher, became ill. This month, aged 83, she passed away.
A keen writer and note-taker, Billie documented most of what happened in her life – the milestones and the mundane, according to the couple’s grandson, Cliff Sims. From captions that ran alongside photographs in their home to funny quotes she overheard, everything was transcribed in her signature school teacher’s cursive.
Her husband Jimmy, a Baptist school minister, had always stuck by his wife’s side, right throughout her illness.
Just before she died, Billie wrote a brief note to Jimmy and planted it in his chequebook in the hopes that her husband would stumble upon it in his own time.
And sure enough, he did.
