Reese Witherspoon is putting her magic producer’s touch on another wildly popular book, this time creating a 1970’s rock ‘n’ roll drama.
Daisy Jones & the Six is a TV adaptation of the novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Malibu Rising, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo), which is set to debut on Prime Video on 3 March.
The series follows a Fleetwood Mac-esque rock band in the 1970’s, charting their rise through the Los Angeles music scene to worldwide success. Much of the story follows the titular Daisy Jones, played by Riley Keough, daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley who has previously starred in Mad Max: Fury Road, Magic Mike and Zola.
Sam Claflin stars opposite as rock heartthrob Billy Dunne, and the series also includes Suki Waterhouse, Sebastian Chacon and Camila Morrone.
The creative team includes Scott Neustadter and Lauren Levy Neustadter, a husband-and-wife team whose past credits include The Fault in Our Stars, The Spectacular Now, Little Fires Everywhere and Where the Crawdads Sing.
As to the music, the producers revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair that they enlisted the help of songwriters Blake Mills and Tony Berg (who have worked with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell) to wrote the original songs, many using the lyrics in Reid’s book.
“It sounds vibrant,” Neustadter says, describing how the band sounds. “It sounds kind of fresh, and doesn’t sound like play acting. [The songs] should feel like songs of that era, but they should kind of stand the test of time. And that was the challenge that we gave the songwriters and they were the best in the world.”
Daisy Jones & the Six premieres on Prime Video on 3 March 2023.
