7 things you didn’t know about Meryl Streep
She's one of the greatest actresses of her generation - but how much do you really know about Meryl Streep?

68-year-old Meryl Streep is one of the greatest actresses of her generation. With a career spanning four decades and including three Academy Awards, there’s no denying that Streep is a force to be reckoned with. The esteemed actress has constantly chosen roles with depth and flair and maintained a distinguished, honest persona off-screen.

Here are seven facts you may not know about one of Hollywood’s greatest stars; from questions of ‘who is Meryl Streep married to?’, to details on her obsession with weight and what she thinks of ageing.

1. She has an honorary degree from Harvard

In 2010 Streep was awarded the honorary degree ‘Doctor of Arts’ from Harvard University for her significant contribution to the arts. Streep completed a Master of Fine Arts at the Yale School of Drama in 1975, during which time she supported herself by waitressing and typing on the side.

2. Her biggest regret is worrying about her weight

“The only thing I have remorse about is that I wasted a lot of time dieting”, Streep told MiNDFOOD in 2014. “I’ve wasted a lot of time on that and I regret it. I was stupid thinking so much about it, obsessing over it, but actresses do that. But nowadays, oh, I’m over it.  I was over it maybe 20 years ago.”

3. Her parenting style is relatable

“I tend to be supervisory in everything I do. I was more the bad cop and more worried about the kids while my husband was more laissez-faire. I always think when you hear from your kids, ‘Everybody else is allowed to, why can’t I?’ as a mother, you say to them, ‘I don’t care that everybody else is doing it'”, she told us in 2014.

4. She has a Life Achievement Award

“She is like no other”, the American Film Insitute said in giving Streep the award in 2004. “She is authentic yet ethereal, self-possessed and vulnerable, intellectual yet instinctive, and she combines these disparate qualities in a way that it made her a cinematic icon.”

5. She doesn’t worry about ageing

“I don’t feel any different than I did when I was seven years old, but I know when I get up out of a chair quickly, I feel it”, she told MiNDFOOD in a prior interview. “But I don’t think my attitude about love has changed when it comes to getting older. I still know I need it and want to give it.”

6. Her number one piece of advice is admirable

“Your health, yes, pay attention to that. Your strength, yes, pay attention to that”, Streep told us in a video interview earlier this year.

7. She is married to a sculptor

Who is Meryl Streep married to you may ask? She married Don Gummer in 1978 with whom he has four children. Gummer is an American sculptor. His early work concentrated on table-top and wall-mounted sculpture; but, in the mid-1980s, he shifted his focus to large free-standing works, often in bronze.
