Hypothyroidism is a common problem that occurs when the body does not produce thyroid hormones. Medicine is often used to treat hypothyroidism, however, diet also plays a key role in managing the condition.

According to Medical News Today, iodine, selenium and zinc are nutrients that can help support a healthy thyroid.

We look at the foods that are rich in these nutrients to improve thyroid health.

1. Salted nuts

Selenium is one of the nutrients that can help maintain a healthy thyroid function.

Salted nuts like macadamia, hazelnuts and brazil nuts are rich in this wonderful nutrient, making them an ideal food to improve thyroid health.

2. Fish

Fish is also rich in selenium as well as Omega-3 fatty acids which can help decrease inflammation and support thyroid health.

Baked fish like salmon or cod is best as the cooking process preserves the important nutrients.

3. Yoghurt

Dairy products like yoghurt contain iodine, a nutrient needed to preserve the thyroid glands from becoming enlarged (also known as ‘goiter’).

Opt for a low-fat yoghurt for as a nutritious type of food to improve thyroid health.

4. Seaweed

Another food that’s rich in iodine, seaweed boasts a range of health benefits – including supporting thyroid health.

There are many types of seaweed out there, all with different amounts of iodine. Kelp, kombu and dulse are very high in iodine so should not be eaten in large amounts. Whereas spirulina contains very little iodine.

Baked seaweed is a good choice as a tasty and healthy snack to improve thyroid health.

5. Eggs

Eggs are another great source of selenium and iodine.

The yolk contains most of the nutrients so its best to consume whole eggs to get the best benefits for your thyroid health.

6. Oysters

Oysters are rich in zinc, a nutrient that has shown to have positive effects on thyroid hormones.

Other foods like beef, crab, fortified cereal and legumes are also rich in zinc and good options for a thyroid-healthy diet.
