5 reasons why we love MiNDFOOD November cover star Hilary Barry

Veteran journalist, broadcast and presenter Hilary Barry has injected humour and empathy into what has been a difficult year for many. It's the same attitude she brings with her when talking about the politics of beauty and the need for women to empower themselves.

5 reasons why we love MiNDFOOD November cover star Hilary Barry

5 things we learned from Hilary Barry’s MiNDFOOD cover story

  • She’s an optimist – and likes to have fun. Barry went viral for her lockdown ‘Formal Fridays’, a much-needed distraction from the deluge of bad news. “I’m a natural cheerleader, I really do try to spread  joy and happiness wherever I go.”
  • She believes beauty is not frivolous. “I outright reject the notion that talking about [beauty] is silly. If it was, it wouldn’t be propping up a multi-billion-dollar industry. We do ourselves no favours by devaluing and denigrating women for being engaged in it.”
  • She uses humour as a weapon against injustice. Recalling the late feminist trailblazer Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Barry said she’s learned to adopt a “gentle approach” in her life, with a touch of humour. “Humour is such a great ploy for highlighting injustices.”

  • She feels a sense of duty to call out misogyny. “I highlight these comments and attitudes that women have to deal with so that we can come together as a society and say, ‘that’s unacceptable’.”
  • She thinks wrinkles are beautiful – and has a problem with ‘anti-ageing’ messaging. “There’s something so beautiful about the translucency of an older woman’s skin. It’s the most beautiful thing the world to me, because we are lucky to get to an age where it shows on our faces.”
