Asos to Ban Mohair, Cashmere and Silk

In a bold move, online fashion retail giant Asos has published an updated animal welfare policy which will see cashmere, silk, down and feathers banned across its entire platform by the end of January 2019.

The new policy states that: “No animals should be slaughtered specifically to produce products sold through any of Asos’s websites,” which means leather, for example, that is a by-product of the meat industry will still be available across Asos’s platforms.

The move comes after the e-tailer and over 140 brands including Topshop and H&M banned the use of mohair after PETA released a shocking video exposé of mohair production.

Sources have  UK-based online fashion giant has bowed to pressure from animal rights group PETA.

In an official statement, PETA’s executive vice president Tracy Reiman said that the organisation “applauds Asos for leading the charge for compassion in fashion. In response to Peta’s campaigns, consumers are changing the face of the industry by demanding that designers and retailers ditch animal-derived materials in favour of cruelty-free alternatives that look great without causing suffering.”
