102-year-old WWII veteran ticks of bucket list with skydive

A fancy dinner or a special holiday might be your typical way to celebrate a birthday milestone. But for 102-year-old Vivian "Millie" Bailey, her birthday called for a more adventurous celebration.

The WWII veteran ticked off her bucket list dream by going on a “parachute jump” with Skydive Baltimore in Maryland, US.

First Lt Bailey, born in Washington DC in 1918, joined the US Women’s Army Auxiliary in 1942.

“I was the commander in charge,” she told local reporters, explaining that during her service in the army, she was awarded several medals, including WWII Victory Medal and Women’s Army Corps Medal.

The veteran said it was always a dream of hers to do a skydive. “[I] just always thought it would be a thrill,” she said.

“At one point when we were tumbling in the air, I felt like I was by myself,” she added. “I thought, ‘Where did the paratrooper go?'”

Skydive Baltimore congratulated Bailey on her impressive achievement. “We were honored and privileged to help make that dream come true! Congratulations Ms. Bailey!” they share on Facebook.

Since the war, Bailey has remained an active member of the local community, sending care packages to troops overseas, supporting food banks and local schools

“I try every day to do something for someone else,” she said.

As for the rest of her bucket list, Bailey says she has one last wish: to meet former First Lady Michelle Obama.

“There are a lot of things that I can look back on,” she said of her life. “I thoroughly am happy and feel blessed that I’ve been able to do whatever I’ve been able to do.
