‘Thorn of Plenty’ is the title of the just-dropped Spring 2025 collection which brings together a selection of new shades and shapes for the Auckland-based brand.
Soft hues drawn from nature inform the new range, with a selection of ideas sparked from considering the label’s two decade journey so far, as well landscapes familiar to its designers.
Deadly Ponies’ Founders, Liam Bowden and Steve Boyd described delving into the archives as “like wandering through a living garden, with wild ideas and chaos down every path.”
The seasonal palette and textures draw from Greenvale, Steve’s family home in Geraldine, a small Canterbury town at the foot of the Southern Alps. A stroll through a garden there revealed intricate details that shaped the collection’s colours and materials.
Highlights include a burnished maroon colour named after Radicchio, a warm tan leather and suede inspired by the soft, yellow moss blanketing birch trees while an icy blue hue mirrors the delicate two-tone hues of pale pumpkin skin — neither blue nor grey, but a subtle blend of both.
Among its beloved roomy handbags and evening-appropriate clutches, the label has further extended its reach in the footwear realm. Previously adding a smaller selection of simple sandals and slides, this collection sees the brand’s first ever sneaker join the line-up.
Bowden says the ‘Road Rider’ sneaker’s arrival was an obvious progression from previous flat shoe styles.
“We’ve always shied away from sneakers, our focus has traditionally been on leather forms that feel refined and elevated, he says. “But as our ballet silhouettes evolved, introducing a sneaker felt like a natural next step.”
Crafted entirely from leather and suede the textural details elevate an otherwise casual style. “It’s streamlined, minimal, and true to our design language, just in sneaker form.”
