Design store Kayu Studio has set up shop in Tāmaki Makaurau.
The furniture and homewares studio and store has been a go-to for interior style in Mount Maunganui since its inception in 2021 and has now opened an expansive Auckland showroom on Westmoreland Street in Grey Lynn.
Focused on easy, stylish and laidback living, prioritising natural materials and exceptional craftsmanship, Kayu offers pieces made with fair trade practices, from both an in-house brand and a selection of other like-minded brands.
“When I founded Kayu Studio, my goal was to create a space where good design meets exceptional craftsmanship,” says founder James Mitchell.
“I wanted to offer pieces that not only enhance the aesthetic of any space but also stand the test of time in terms of quality and functionality. Our new showroom allows us to showcase
these principles even better and connect with a broader network of customers.”
Sleek and simple furniture boasts modern lines that will elevate any modern living space. Or, if you’re looking for smaller finishing pieces there are plenty of desirable elements like rugs, cups and glassware, decorative or functional bowls and baskets and even large scale art prints.
A Mount Maunganui local and keen surfer, Mitchell previously travelled the globe following the waves, before settling in Bali and founding interior design and property management company Salt Villas.
Mitchell now spends over six months of the year in Indonesia, working closely with the artisans of Kayu Studio’s in-house brand and sourcing décor, furniture, and homewares from similarly like-minded companies.
Late last year Kayu Studio opened a substantial showroom on Totara Street in Mount Maunganui alongside Kayu Casa a one-bedroom Airbnb-styled apartment outfitted with Kayu
wares.
