Australian actress and singer Nicole Kidman has been in the film business since the early 80s, finding fame with 1986 romantic comedy Windrider. It wasn’t until 1995 that she gained global attention, however, when she played Dr. Chase Meridian in Hollywood blockbuster Batman Forever. Since then she has starred in a wealth of hit films, including To Die For (1995), Moulin Rouge! (2001), The Others (2001) and Cold Mountain (2003). Most recently, Kidman is known for her roles in the extremely successful television series Big Little Lies and The Undoing.

Kidman has won a large number of awards over the years, becoming the first Australian actress to win an Academy Award (for The Hours, 2002) and just taking out the Golden Globe for Best Actress this year. Throughout the years Kidman, now 50, has maintained a kind and humble manner, generating a large following of fans. Here are 10 things you may not know about the Australian beauty.

1. She’s not afraid to speak her mind.

In a post on Facebook, the Australian star wrote: “In my heart I’m independent, a bit of a rebel, a nonconformist.” She has used acceptances speeches to speak out about important issues. For example, in 2018 she discussed the need for gender equality while accepting a Best Actress gong at the SAG Awards.

2. She’s naturally a redhead.

Despite her now-blonde locks, Kidman is a redhead by birth. The star sported her natural hair colour for years before turning to a blonde shade.

3. She’s a UNICEF and UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador.

Kidman became an ambassador for UNICEF in 1994 and UNIFEM in 2006. She visited Kosovo in 2006 to promote a development fund for women, and was made a Companion in the Order of Australia the same year. “I do believe that there is enormous possibility to change this world and each of us has the opportunity to do it in a very small way,” she said.

4. She loves living in the moment.

“Forget the past. You can never predict what the future is going to be. Live for the moment,” she told Vogue. “I don’t believe in flittering around the edges of things. You’re either going to walk through life and experience it fully or you’re going to be a voyeur. And I’m not a voyeur.”

5. She was married to Tom Cruise for over a decade.

The celebrity couple met in 1989 when they starred in Days of Thunder together, and were married for 10 years. Kidman admitted to feeling shocked by the divorce and said she still loved Cruise in an interview five years after the couple’s separation. “To me, he was just Tom, but to everybody else, he is huge. But he was lovely to me. And I loved him. I still love him.”

6. Now she’s been married to Keith Urban for 14 years.

Kidman met musician Keith Urban in 2005 and they share two children together. Urban frequently attends red carpet events as Kidman’s date and the two regularly express their love to each other on social media.

7. She’s a role model for aspiring actresses.

“You want to take some responsibility for your choices so that it sets the groundwork for that next generation of actresses,” Kidman wrote on social media. The actress has generally stayed out of the spotlight when it comes to unwanted drama and is supportive of other women in the business.

8. She’s best friends with Naomi Watts.

The two actresses attended the same Australian high school and theatre company, before becoming good friends on the set of coming-of-age drama Flirting in 1991. In a 2005 Telegraph interview, Kidman revealed how much their friendship meant to her. “Naomi and I are very, very good friends and have maintained that through so many things. I think that’s really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that.”

9. …and Reese Witherspoon.

Reese Witherspoon and Kidman became close while filming Big Little Lies in 2016, and their friendship quickly blossomed. Witherspoon’s Instagram account is flooded with pictures of the two actresses, and Kidman said she loves her costar in an E! News interview. “We have so much in common and we’re very close. I’m lucky to have her as such a good friend.”

10. She loves fashion.

Kidman has long been a fan of fashion, attending numerous events and always wearing incredible gowns by the world’s top designers on the red carpet.
