Summer lovin’

By Penny Hunt

On the eve of a European holiday Penny Hunt shares her picks of must-have summer trends.

I’m about to head overseas into the tail end of the European summer for a long-overdue holiday. But I’m struggling with the concept of dressing for warm weather. Why is it when you peruse your wardrobe from last season it feels so outdated when really it’s only been a few months? I’m convinced my holiday is a good excuse for some impulse shopping to grab the first of the coming season’s fashions.

Here are my picks of the must-have summer trends.

The no-brainer trend: The jumpsuit

The one-piece romper suit is back, featured, it seems, in the collection of anyone who can sew: Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Lanvin, Etro, Roberto Cavalli and Australian designers Ginger & Smart and Kit Willow. So it tops my list because this season it’s more popular than the little black dress and you don’t need to think about what it goes with.

The computer-generated trend: Futuristic print

Computer-generated prints are big this coming season. Think neon colours and lightning-bolt imagery. Summer’s prints have evolved into galactic tech designs that can be worn day and night. Check out Scanlan & Theodore’s new range of fantastic light tops and dresses or Josh Goot’s silky summer shifts.

The picture-perfect trend: Image prints

I just want to be clear: this trend is not an excuse to start making T-shirts with iron-on transfers of your dog, cat or family. A landscape scene is much more likeable. Newcomer Karla Spetic presented skirts and slips with outback scenes, while seasoned trendsetter Christopher Kane produced volcano-inspired T-shirts.

The go-nude trend: The new beige

Another warning: this is not a permission slip to strip bare this summer. Natural-coloured skin tones are in, and that could be anything from browns and beiges to pastel peaches. The fleshy textures of Lisa Ho’s cropped blazer and ruched skirts are high on my must-have list, followed by Gary Bigeni’s relaxed, soft, jersey tank-style dresses and tops in creams and salmon hues.
