These tattoos are turning breast cancer surgery scars into artwork

A photo of a woman’s tattoo on her breasts following a post-operative double mastectomy after breast cancer has gone viral.

The image was posted by a Darwin tattoo parlour owned by Mimm d’Abbs, who created the work. 24 hours after d’Abbs posted the photo to Facebook it has been shared 14,000 times and liked by 175,000 people.

It was the first time that d’Abbs had created a tattoo like it, and told the ABC that she had been inundated with requests from women who had gone through a double mastectomy.

Working on this tattoo, d’Abbs told the ABC, was one of the most powerful points of her career.

“It was probably the most emotional I’ve been about a tattoo,” she told the ABC.

“I was very honoured to have the opportunity to make a difference to how somebody viewed themselves who had been dealt not such a great hand.”

The tattoo took 3.5 hours to create, and d’Abbs says that the woman was incredibly brave.

The outpouring of support online has left d’Abbs “gobsmacked.”
