The Fat Duck is open for business
Foodies, rejoice: Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck has opened for business.

The Fat Duck pop-up at Crown Casino in Melbourne has opened its doors to the first service of its six-month residency today.

The wonderful world of Heston Blumenthal, a “gastronomic journey of history, nostalgia, emotion and memory” has been picked up and relocated in its new location, giving Australian diners an opportunity to gorge at the famous restaurant.

Since its announcement last year, The Fat Duck has seen 90,000 hopefuls flock to the waiting list in anticipation for scoring a seat at the $525 four-and-a-half-hour degustation.

Unfortunately, only a lucky 14,000 were given the opportunity to dine at the 50-seat restaurant overlooking the Yarra River.

Photos of the menu have surfaced revealing the Fat Duck favourites of Snail Porridge, Sound Of The Sea and the Mad Hatters Tea Party, all translated for the Australian stage. Although in true Heston style, all ingredients have been edited to reveal a local Australian influence.

With his famous Whiskey Wine Gums made using a Tasmanian Whisky, Heston has also made use of a national icon, with a Golden Gaytime included in the ‘Like A Kid In A Sweet Shop’ lolly bag.

As promised, Heston’s joyful offerings look sure to delight with their out-of-this-world creativity. In adding to the theatre of experience as Heston does, each diner has received a puzzle piece, which will be slowly put together over the coming months, only to be completed at the end of the final service.

Even Blumenthal is not immune to nerves, telling the Herald Sun “I’m not nervous about us being able to physically deliver the product. I just want people to like it. Expectations can be a good and bad thing.”
