Seven chefs for seven courses, and a very good cause
Head chef and owner of nel. restaurant, Nelly Robinson has rounded up the big culinary guns for an exclusive event to raise funds for the treatment of Lyme Disease.

Chefs lined up to prepare the seven-course dinner includes Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook), Troy Crisante (Bennelong), Laura Eldridge (Pei Modern), Kirk Howarth (ex-Marque), Jason Brown and Fabian Mucke (nel.) and Pasi Petersen, (ex Café Paci). It will be hosted by Nova FM’s Matt de Groot, the evening will raise money for the treatment of people suffering from Lyme Disease in Australia and abroad.

Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by bacteria, which humans contract when bitten by an infected tick. The most common sign of infection is an expanding area of redness, that begins at the site of a tick bite about a week after it has occurred. However, 25–50% of infected people don’t develop a rash. Other early symptoms can include fever, headache and feeling tired. Left untreated, it may include lead to the loss of ability to move one or both sides of the face, joint pains, severe headaches with neck stiffness, or heart palpitations. People with the disease can have enduring health problems, such as repeated episodes of joint pain and swelling.

The inspiration for the fundraising event was sparked by Nelly’s best friend, Kirk Haworth, son of Nigel Haworth (co-owner and chef at the Michelin-starred Northcote Manor in the UK). Kirk contracted the disease while in Australia and as a result, was forced to retire from cooking at 28. He now faces a grueling road ahead without treatment and the potential to develop symptoms such as blindness, partial paralysis and seizures.

The auction will include prizes such as an exclusive two-night stay at the Emirates One&Only, Wolgan Valley, to the value of $4,500; Electrolux home appliances to the value of $800; a day’s shoot with Fairfax photographer Cole Bennetts; a personal Keith Tulloch wine tasting at the vineyard with cheese; and a fully complimentary 4-night stay at Anantara’s Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in Sri Lanka.

“This disease affects hundreds of thousands of people world-wide every year and is just not taken seriously enough,” says Kirk “Thousands of people just like me are visiting their local GP complaining of serious symptoms and are simply being ignored or not taken seriously. Imagine feeling as though your life is falling apart in front of you – and no-one wants to listen.”

All money raised from the event will be donated to Lyme Disease Australia and to Kirk’s medical fund, which is helping Kirk with his ongoing treatment.

Each chef has been tasked with including a lime in each dish.

Ticket Prize: $185 to include a seven-course tasting menu with matching wines.

Location: nel. Restaurant, 75 Wentworth Avenue, Surry Hills NSW 2000.

Time and date: Monday October 10, 6.30pm arrival.
