Self-tans

By Milly Nolan

Fake a healthy glow with products that will have you bronzed in no time. Beauty Editor Milly Nolan tests six of the best.

Lancôme

Sôleil Flash Bronzer
Self-Tanning Magic Mousse, $52

The airy texture of this self-tanning mousse rubs into the skin easily and the tinted colour enables you to see where you have applied it – as well as giving instant colour that deepens over several hours into a very natural, golden colour. It has a quick dry-time (3 minutes), a pleasant scent and leaves your skin soft and smooth.

Dr. Lewinn’s

Sunless Self Tanning Lotion, $38

Designed for all skin types, this self-tanning lotion feels, looks and smells more like a moisturiser than a fake tanning product and skin is left feeling silky and soft rather than sticky. It takes a bit of rubbing in until the creamy lotion is distributed evenly but once it develops the tan is very natural – perfect for those who prefer a more subtle tan.

Clarins

Self Tanning Milk with
Sun Protection SPF6, $51

A dollop of this pleasant-smelling tinted gel goes a long way and rubs in with ease. The gel’s brown-tinted colour gives the skin immediate radiance on contact, while a long-lasting caramel-coloured tan develops in one to two hours. The SPF6 will help protect against premature signs of ageing and free radicals.

Piz Buin

Self Tan Summer Sensation Tinted Lotion, $23

Being tinted, this self-tan lotion gives you an immediate glow as well as allowing you to see areas you may have missed. It takes about five minutes to absorb fully, yet due to its hydrating properties it acts as a moisturiser as well. The tan lasts 5-10 days depending on how often you wash or swim. Available in two different shade intensities, MID (for fairer skin) and MAX (for darker skin tones) and in a foam or spray formula.

Le Tan

Fast Tan Le Tan in Le Can, $21

This self-tan spray gives you
a result similar to a professional salon spray-tan, but in the comfort of your own home. Because of the spray action, the application can be rather messy (it is best done in the shower cubicle or over a towel) yet the streak-free finish and the golden bronze tan you are left with is worth the effort. The clever spray nozzle allows you to hold the can at any angle so you
can spray the hard-to-reach places too.

St. Tropez

Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $59

This lightweight self-tanning mousse is frightfully dark in colour but once it is rubbed into the skin, the colour disperses and spreads evenly. The formula works to complement any skin tone, delivering a natural-looking tan that develops over three hours. Best of all, the instant colour dries in just 60 seconds so you can dress immediately and walk out the door feeling confident about flashing bare skin. Ideal for face and body.
