The Louvre in Paris, the world’s most visited museum, is set to close on Friday after days of torrential rain caused flooding.

The closure will allow staff to move works at risk of damage to higher parts of the gallery, a statement from the Louvre said.

The river which runs through Paris, the Seine, has rise more than five metres above normal levels flooding parts of Paris and causing headaches for tourist attractions such as the Louvre.

Heavy rains across Europe have left at least 10 people dead, most of them in Germany.

According to the BBC more downpours are forecast across the weekend throughout central Europe from France to Ukraine.
