Young boy donates his organs, fulfilling desire “to be a great kid”
Doctors bow to the body of an 11 year-old boy who makes the ultimate selfless decision

Childhood is generally thought to be a blissfully self-absorbed stage of life.

An 11 year-old boy from China has certainly broken the mould and has reminded the world about just how selfless and giving some can be.

At just nine years of age, Liang Yaoyi began experiencing dizziness and had trouble walking, and was soon diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. The devastating news was delivered shortly after Liang moved to Shenzhen to join his brother and sister to attend primary school.

Before passing away on June 6th 2014, Liang had expressed a desire to his mother to donate his organs. “There are many people doing great things in the world. They are great, and I want to be a great kid, too”.

Liang had also said that organ transplant was a chance for him to be “alive in another way”.

Having always dreamed of being a doctor and saving lives, this was one way Liang could fulfil his goal.

Liang’s mother chose to respect her son’s decision and honour his wishes. Doctors were able to save his liver and kidneys for donation.

A photograph taken in the operating theatre prior to the organ removal has gone viral, showing doctors paying their respects as they bow before Liang’s body, while his mother cries in the background.

It is a gut-wrenching, yet inspiring image that illustrates the bravery and selflessness of a young boy, who touched the lives of thousands worldwide and in doing so, lives on.
