Find the right facial

By Milly Nolan

Don’t let your skin suffer during the silly season. Milly Nolan finds the best facials to keep your skin looking fresh and bright throughout summer. MiNDFOOD reports.

If your schedule is anything like mine, then the lead-up to Christmas will require the skills of a professional juggler. For most of November and December, my weekends will be spent at an engagement party, a hens’ party or a wedding; as for weekdays, I will be swapping my flats for heels as I head from the office to a new product launch, store/restaurant opening or a Christmas event. During all this never-ending fun (it’s frantic, too), I find that my skin is the one thing that suffers the most. Unfortunately, no amount of make-up can disguise a dull complexion. However, my skin will not be paying the price this year, as I have decided to treat myself to fortnightly facials to see me through the festive season. And I recommend you do the same – not only will your skin love you for it, but it’s also a nice, indulgent way to take a bit of time out. While very different from each other, I have two favourite facials that help keep my skin fresh, vibrant and healthy during summer – one is a slice of luxury, the other is a great skin workout.

Sodashi Thermal Infusion Facial

The Sanctuary Day Spa at Mollies

The ultimate treat for your skin (and your soul), this facial uses chemical-free Sodashi skincare products, which are made from the highest quality plant essences and natural ingredients. As well as smelling divine, the ingredients are also based on natural healing powers, so this treatment is perfect for sending you into a state of deep relaxation while the products work their magic. The hydrating facial begins with a double cleanse, which is then followed by exfoliation, a 20-minute facial massage and a 25-minute thermal mask, all of which are supported by the application of numerous oils and serums. While the mask is processing, you are treated to a heavenly hand and foot massage. By the end, I am always in such a deep slumber that I need to be woken up by the therapist. My skin, however, always looks the opposite to how I feel – alive, refreshed and rejuvenated, and it remains that way for days. Plus, the extra winks are always welcomed!

Osmosis Medi Facial, Clinc 42 or Arya Day Spa

This facial makes use of Osmosis’ active ingredients, such as vitamin C and A, so it is very much a workout for your skin, as the products work at a deep cellular level to increase collagen and elastin, restore antioxidant levels and remove toxins and debris. In order to get the desired results, each facial is customised according to your specific skin needs, whether it is dehydration, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, rosacea, photodamage or hyperpigmentation. For me, restoring moisture to the skin and normalising and brightening skin tone were my main concerns. Because of the active ingredients in the Osmosis range, your skin may be left looking slightly irritated or inflamed immediately after treatment. When I tried it, my skin was red and tingled ever so slightly (due to the stimulation), but this subsided after an hour or two. The next day, however, my skin looked renewed – as if the top layer had shed to reveal a brand new, luminous layer beneath. However, it is not uncommon to experience some dryness or sloughing of the skin from day three to seven as the skin continues to renew itself. Because of this, it is best to have this treatment a week in advance of a big event – not the day of, although the results are well worth the wait.
