Cuttin’ it bob style

By Milly Nolan

A stylish new haircut injects a burst of confidence in me that wasn’t there before, writes MiNDFOOD beauty editor Milly Nolan.

I know how Victoria Beckham, with her brand new ‘do, must feel right now – confident, chic, edgy.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check it out here.

I recently had a hair make-over myself and although I truly love the end result, the experience was slightly traumatic.

It began with an interview with UK hairstylist Guy Kremer. Meeting an international, world-renowned hairdresser posed a problem for me – what on earth will he think of my hair?

In previous experiences with hairdressers, either the condition, the cut or the colour of my hair has always managed to raise a discerning eyebrow.

With this in mind, on the morning of the MiNDFOOD photography shoot with Guy as the hairstylist, I took extra care to make sure my crowing glory looked as good as it possibly could.

To my surprise, however, within minutes of being exuberantly met by Parisian-born Guy (three kisses, not one), rather than having my hair critiqued, I was instead persuaded to have it cut into a short, blunt bob with a fringe.

Nerves aside, how could I resist? Not only is the bob cut one of the hottest hair trends this season, but I was also in the hands of a stylist who has cut the hair of France’s First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

It was a definite case of “I’ll have what she’s having, thanks.”

After much snipping and preening, the end result was a style I loved immediately. Guy chopped at least three inches off my shoulder-length hair into a blunt, chin-length bob and my unkempt, straggly bangs became a two-layered, long fringe that sat on my eyelashes.

Admittedly the length of the fringe made seeing rather difficult at first, but I soon mastered the technique of flicking my head slightly to reposition what was now, rather conveniently, hiding the creases on my forehead.

Although it required a level of maintenance I was previously unfamiliar with (resulting in a few mornings late to work), the benefit of my new do, was that I was forced into using more conditioning treatments and styling products than ever before.

No longer could I hide a bad hair day by pulling it into a ponytail. I now use Kerastase Chroma Riche shampoo and conditioner daily, followed by Kerastase Ciment Thermique before blow drying, L’Oreal Professionnel Techni.Art Hot Style Iron Finish before straightening with irons, and to finish it off, L’Oreal Professional Play Ball Silky Sunrise.

I now understand the value of a makeover and appreciate how refreshing change can be. My new bob somehow injected me with a burst of confidence that wasn’t there before.

Having never been blessed with hair that was enviable in any way, all of a sudden I was being complimented on the one thing I had always wished was nicer. Sporting such a chic cut also made my whole appearance appear edgier – suddenly my clothes looked that much more interesting and I experimented more with make-up to suit my new look.

Who’d have known that a haircut could make such a difference?

In fear of the approaching summer weather and the effect humidity has on my prone-to-frizz-hair, I have no choice but to grow out my fringe to avoid looking like an untamed poodle.

I will however, be going back for a new look next winter and perhaps I will try something even more radical than before (maybe Victoria’s new pixie cut). Now, all I need to do is convince Guy to move to New Zealand to be my personal hairstylist.

Look out for the latest issue of MiNDFOOD magazine in which Guy Kremer shares his expertise on springtime hair trends – the bob and me modelling it, included.
