In the war torn city of Zadar in Croatia a local architect Nikola Bašić has created a public ‘Sea Organ’ that uses the motion of the sea to create a unique soundscape.

The organ is built into the city’s marble promenade; it comprises of 35 pipes connected under a series of stairs and carried through to openings along the promenade path. Random melodic and rhythmic sounds are produced as the water laps and wind moves along the marble steps of the jetty.

The acoustic promenade draws tourists and locals with its mysterious underground sounds, chosen to represent the male voice. Along with the impeccably clean architecture, the Organ creates a soothing space to relax and get lost in the beautiful view of the Adriatic Sea.

The exhibit was designed as an effort to rebuild the city, which is more than 3,000 years old, after the destruction that was caused by the Second World War.
