Semicolon tattoos are empowering people suffering from depression

Not everyone is a fan of tattoos although their popularity has surged in recent years. Now, semi-colon tattoos are trending as a permanent way for people to show support to those struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and self-harming behaviours.

So why choose a semicolon? Project Semicolon’s website states, “A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life.”

The organisation’s founder has a personal connection with the concept. Amy Bluel was the first to get inked with the punctuation mark after her father committed suicide when she was 18.

The project began on April 16th, 2013, and now thousands of people have uploaded their tattoos on social media in support. Project Semicolon says they are dedicated to ‘presenting hope and love’ to people in need, writing on their website,

“It is our hope that through this campaign we can show others that there is hope despite the pain. No matter how hard is it gets we can declare that Hope is Alive. “

Would you consider getting a semicolon tattoo?
