The most borrowed books in Australian libraries might surprise you

The unique agony of finishing a great book and not knowing what to read next (or risking reading something that you won’t enjoy nearly as much) is something that libraries around Australia would like to eradicate.

In honour of Library and Information Week the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) have released the top ten most borrowed adult and children’s books from more than 150 Australian libraries across four categories. They’re hoping that publishing these lists will make bookworms’ decisions easier.

Sue McKerracher, the chief executive of ALIA, told The Sydney Morning Herald that e-books make up just 5 per cent of loans from the library, showing that printed books still have an important role in the future.

Ms McKerracher told The Sydney Morning Herald that the future was hopeful for print.

“The feeling now is that, yes, we’re all going digital, but actually print is still a very attractive medium and people are using multiple formats,” McKerracher said.
