Meet Western Plains Zoo’s super cute new addition
Adorable baby Koala “Thunder’ emerges from mum’s pouch

A sweet little joey named “Thunder” has become the first baby of the season to emerge from the comfort and safety of his mother’s pouch at Western Plains Zoo.

Born to a mum and dad with equally dynamic monikers, “Wild Girl” and “Storm” respectively, Thunder is seven-months-old and already an expert at charming visitors and zoo staff.

Mum “Wild Girl” first came to Western Plains Zoo as a rescue after being struck by a car.

Karen James, a keeper at the zoo said, “Wild Girl recovered but due to a permanent hip wound, was unable to be released into the wild, so she found a home at the Zoo and this is her second precious joey”.

Mother and baby don’t venture too far from one another with Wild Girl demonstrating her protective style of parenting.

The zoo is waiting with bated breath for one more joey, which is still pink and not ready to come out and say hi.

The babies have been an especially welcome addition as Koala numbers have been dwindling as a result of their habitat being increasingly cleared.

With their homes being destroyed they are on the move more than ever, and the risk of being hurt is elevated.

Just yesterday David Horstman from Pine Rivers Koala Care spoke of “stacks” of koalas that are currently being killed on roads – cars are now the second biggest killer after disease.

Mr Horstman asked that people contact the RSPCA or local koala care services if they notice an injured koala.
