Jennifer Aniston explains why she wrote powerful op-ed denouncing tabloid journalism
"We as women do a lot of incredible things in this world other than just procreate," said Aniston.

Our December cover star, Jennifer Aniston, has explained why she felt the need to write her incredibly powerful Op-Ed, published earlier in the year.

Speaking on Wednesday’s Ellen Degeneres Show, Jennifer spoke out about the decades of relentless tabloid harassment that inspired her to say ‘enough is enough’.

When Aniston first wrote the piece, she admitted it was only initially intended to be a personal reflection.

“I was pretty raw at the time,” said Aniston. After returning from a vacation following her mother’s death, she was overwhelmed by paparazzi at the airport. Following this event, she realised they had taken photos of her stomach and tabloids had published the pictures with a line drawn pointing to her apparent ‘baby  bump’. This was the same story Aniston said she’s had to “live with for the last 10 to 15 years.”

“I was just fed up with it and I think these tabloids, all of us, need to take responsibility on what we ingest into our brains,” she said.

“Just because we are women, we have a uterus, we have a vagina, we have ovaries, we need to like, ‘Get to work, lady.”

Not discrediting motherhood, Aniston was quick to point out that there are plenty of other successes to be celebrated by the world, beyond childbirth.

“We as women do a lot of incredible things in this world other than just procreate,” said Aniston.

She called for an end to mindless consumption of falsified tabloid stories that seek to discredit and disempower women, and men, around the world, just to make money.

“Whatever the horrible headline is, we’ve just got to break out of that and go ‘Who, whoa,” said Aniston, adding that women are also at the helm of these “horrible articles” as writers and publishers.

“It’s up to us what makes us happy and fulfilled”, asking that people will stop buying these magazines so as to send a clear message that this is not acceptable.
