Interview: Agnes Obel

Interview: Agnes Obel
Agnes Obel is touring this November in celebration of her sophomore release, Aventine. MiNDFOOD catches up with the Danish singer songwriter.

Growing up in a musical family (her mother was a famed pianist and her father an instrument collector), it was only natural that Obel would take up music so early on.

“I think I was about six when I first started playing [piano], but not seriously; it was more just playing around.”

Discovered on MySpace in 2008, Obel’s track Just So was used in a big advert in her hometown of Berlin. The rest as they say was history.

Obel’s hypnotic songs went on to catch the world’s attention on her widely acclaimed debut album, Philharmonics. Rife with human emotion and her now signature haunting vocals, it went on to sell more than half a million copies.

For her second album, Aventine, Obel recorded, produced and arranged the entire work, harnessing mainly her vocal and piano skills.

“I see it as both a continuation and a new body of work altogether. One of the things I tried to do this time was maintain certain moods, state of minds or personal experiences.”

As for the aesthetic side of her trade, Obel sees this as almost equally central to creating a succinct soundscape.

“My boyfriend, Alex Brüel, helps with the videos and visuals. He’s very talented. I think film and music influence each other a lot. My mum was a very keen art collector so maybe that’s why I see this as so important.”
