Half an avocado a day keeps snacking at bay
Eating half an avocado at lunchtime can help you feel fuller and reduce your chances of snacking by up to 40 per cent.

The Loma Linda University in California compared the impact of introducing a fresh avocado at lunch with the effects of eating a regular lunch in 26 healthy yet overweight adults. The team examined which one influenced satiety, blood sugar and insulin response. Their results shows that those who ate the avocado half reported a 40 per cent decreased desire to eat over the next five hours.

The experts also reported that the participants experienced increased feelings of satisfaction over the three hours after the meal.

“Satiety is an important factor in weight management, because people who feel satisfied are less likely to snack between meals,” said nutritionist Dr Joan Sabate from the Loma Linda University in California.

“We noted that though adding avocados increased participants’ calorie and carbohydrate intake at lunch, there was no increase in blood sugar levels beyond what was observed after eating the standard lunch.

While the findings were positive, Dr Sabate notes that further research is needed to determine whether the results can be applied to the general public.
