Five Of Our Favourite Food Trucks

Five Of Our Favourite Food Trucks
There’s something comforting about grabbing a bite to eat on the run. We tracked down five of our favourites.

Lardo – Portland, Oregon

Lardo has been winning hearts in the Portland area of Oregon since 2009. When it launched, chef-owner Rick Gencarelli’s plan was to stay in touch with the local community by closing the gap between kitchen and customer – and it’s working. Lardo’s famous fries (with herbs and parmesan) and Griddled Mortadella Sandwich and Double Burger – with pork belly, cheddar and Lardo sauce – have now become the stuff of food legend.

Comida – Boulder, Colorado

Bright and unashamedly pink, the Comida food truck (called Tina) offers some of the best Mexican street food north of the border. While the truck might be flash, the food is gimmick-free. Owner Rayme Rossello focuses on the quality of every ingredient, producing tasty tacos, gorditas, tostadas and quesadillas. Everything is cooked from scratch using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. If you have more time there’s also a Comida sit-down joint nearby. Buen provecho!

Banger Boys – Auckland, New Zealand

Inspired by the hot-dog stands of New York City, Billie Nelson teamed up with chef Will Keely and started Banger Boys over three years ago. Their gourmet hot dogs are available in two mouth-watering flavours: pork and herb, or smoked beef. Dogs come wrapped in artisan bread and are topped with lashings of homemade sauce and caramelised onion. Once only strictly Auckland based, the Boys are taking their truck south this year for the first time.

Jiannetto’s Pizza Trucks – New York City, NEw York

Jiannetto’s started with a single truck on Wall Street in 1998. Today, three trucks share the responsibility of delivering award-winning thin-crust Sicilian pizza from downtown Manhattan to Park Avenue. Recognised as one of the best pizza trucks around town, Jiannetto’s is for New York slice purists: traditional pie with a molten layer of mozzarella and homemade tomato sauce, crowned with parmesan cheese. When’s the next flight?

Eat Art Truck – Sydney, Australia

Sydneysiders were treated to the food cart experience last year, when the Eat Art Truck rolled in. With chef Stuart McGill (of Tetsuya’s fame) and ex-Quay chef Brenton Balicki helming the kitchen, the Eat Art Truck was an instant hit. The menu includes pulled pork rolls, Spatchcock Ssam – a confit of bird, vermicelli and fried garlic served up in lettuce leaves – and BBQ beef. Eat Art provides amazing eat-on-your-feet-ease with its rotating menu based on seasonal produce. Eat Art (as the name suggests) also provides street artists with a blank, roaming canvas to showcase their work, which eventually goes to auction.
