Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has condemned comments by her republican rival Donald Trump suggesting “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions, if it becomes illegal.

Trump made the comments during a town hall event with cable network MSBNC. He supports a ban on abortions, with certain exceptions.

Abortion is legal in the United States after a landmark Supreme Court ruling in 1973.

Clinton, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s stance on women’s issues, said on Twitter his latest comments were “horrific and telling”.

“Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse,” she said.

According to the CNN Republican leaders have expressed concern about Trump’s prospects in the general election because polls shows he is extremely unpopular with female voters.

These views are unlikely to do anything to change that.
