The ability for change to come at the click of the button, might be closer than you think.
Ecosia might not be a household name yet, but hopefully with the help of the internet, it will be. The search engine operates on exactly the same idea as Google. Like any other search engine it earns money from the ads displayed next to the search results.
Unlike Google however, each input that is typed into the search engine, goes towards planting a tree in Burkina Faso, Africa.
Each search earns approximately half a cent. Now this doesn’t sound like much, but one tree can be purchased and planted for 28 cents or 56 searches.
Ecosia has already managed to plant 2.5 million trees in the region that has been devastated by drought for nearly half a century.
By replenishing the trees in this drought stricken region, the company can help replenish the economy too. By providing crops to feed people, jobs are slowly becoming more plentiful and the region is able to rebuild itself.
