Winemakers Tim and Judy Finn (not the musician), create a range of stunning pinot noirs and this is one of the best. Deep purple in colour, brimming with savoury spice aromas and earthy flavours, it’s a stunner – now or in a couple of years’ time.

2008 Turanga Creek Late Harvest Viognier $28
Turanga Creek is a new vineyard in the Auckland suburb of Whitford and this Late Harvest Viognier is one of its first wines. Made by winemaker Rod McDonald, it’s created from grapes that are entirely all hand tendered and currently being converted to organic and biodynamic production. I love its lithe silky mouthfeel, long finish and the intense floral aromas. Chill lightly and enjoy with your favourite cheese.

2006 Qupe Central Coast Syrah $40
Wow doesn’t even begin to do justice to this fascinatingly good syrah from California. It’s subtly spicy with rich and dense dark plummy flavours and a finish that never seems to end. Great wine.
