2007 Neudorf Moutere Pinot Noir $49

"Small but beautifully formed" is the best way to describe the wine production at Neudorf Vineyards, tucked in the pretty Moutere Hills. Winemakers Tim and Judy Finn (not the musician), create a range of stunning pinot noirs and this is one of the best. Deep purple in colour, brimming with savoury spice aromas and earthy flavours, it’s a stunner – now or in a couple of years’ time.

2006 Waimea Dry Riesling $18

If riesling means sweet to you, check out this stunning dry version from Waimea Estates winery in Nelson. It’s a style departure in all the best ways from most Kiwi rieslings, proving that this unappreciated grape is deliciously versatile.

2007 Waimea SV Pinot Noir $30

Nelson has many strings to its wine bow, including pinot noir. This gorgeously pure pinot noir is fruit driven from its bright red cherry aromas to its spicy, fruit centred core. A stunner.

2008 Waimea Gewurztraminer $22

Awesome expression of gewürztraminer from Nelson. Intense aromas of old-fashioned red rose petals marry beautifully with the juicy Turkish Delight flavours of this wine.

2008 Turanga Creek Late Harvest Viognier $28

Turanga Creek is a new vineyard in the Auckland suburb of Whitford and this Late Harvest Viognier is one of its first wines. Made by winemaker Rod McDonald, it’s created from grapes that are entirely all hand tendered and currently being converted to organic and biodynamic production. I love its lithe silky mouthfeel, long finish and the intense floral aromas. Chill lightly and enjoy with your favourite cheese.

Aligeur Cava $23

Cava is Spain’s answer to high-class bubbles and this version is the first rung on the ladder of utterly delicious, modern, complex-flavoured sparkling wines. It has made its way to New Zealand thanks to the adventurous palate and wine choice of Chris Carrad, owner of The Wine Circle in Huapai. Buy it.

2006 Qupe Central Coast Syrah $40

Wow doesn’t even begin to do justice to this fascinatingly good syrah from California. It’s subtly spicy with rich and dense dark plummy flavours and a finish that never seems to end. Great wine.
