Red, white or rose, there’s a wine to suit every palate and pocket in this week’s top seven.
2006 Gibbston Valley Central Otago Pinot Noir $42-48
It’s not just flavour of the month in New Zealand, this pinot noir walked off with a gold medal winner from the London International Wine Challenge last week.
Big, robust tannins sit well with the soft plumy fruit flavours in this wine, which is a delicious way to see in the beginning of winter. From specialist wine stores or Gibbston Valley Wines.
FOOD MATCH: Roast lamb on a bed of fresh rosemary.
2006 Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Riesling $20-21
If all New Zealand Rieslings were as good as this, we'd have a massive Riesling movement on our hands.
It tastes as fresh as a daisy with its lively lime, green apple and citrus flavours. Widely available or Lawson's Dry Hills.
FOOD MATCH: Mini Thai fish cakes as an entrée.
2006 Morton Estate Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay $19-20
Rare good value, this Hawke’s Bay chardonnay. It provides deliciously fresh, unadulterated chardonnay that tastes of nectarines and peaches, without the affectation of over the top oak. I love its clean, fruit-led flavours. Buy lots. Widely available.
FOOD MATCH: Fresh pan-fried white fish with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
2005 Grant Burge Barossa Vines Shiraz $19-20
Fantastic value for money, every mouthful overflows with rich, dark fruit flavours.
To say this wine is a bargain at less than NZ$20 is to make a wild understatement. Widely available at wine stores.
FOOD MATCH: Venison sausages with creamy parsnip mash.
2007 Morton Estate Musetta Rose $19-20
The light red colour of Musetta Rose comes from the combination of Merlot and Malbec grapes.
Just off dry in style, this vibrant rose is fresh and flavoursome, thanks to the richness of Malbec in the wine. Widely available.
FOOD MATCH: Slivers of rare roasted beef on a bed of rocket with aioli.
2006 Corbans Waipara Riesling $14-15
Like most Waipara Rieslings, this is pure limes and apples with a hint of spice.
It has an almost bone dry finish and is great value for money for everyday drinking. Serve lightly chilled. Widely available.
FOOD MATCH: Salted cashews.
2007 Mission Kawera Road Sauvignon Blanc $18-20
Who says Hawke’s Bay can’t produce stunningly expressive, pure and focussed sauvignon blanc? Tropical fruit flavours, medium body, a slightly herby edge, this wine pushes the stylistic boundaries of Hawke’s Bay sauvignon blanc in all the best ways. Widely available.
FOOD MATCH: Salt cod and potato cakes, Spanish style.
