SYDNEY ARTS FESTIVAL
The Sydney Festival is a highlight of the Australian summer cultural calendar. Presenting a programme of international performers and artists the festival comes together in an avalanche of artistic activity. Entertaining an estimated 1 million people annually it opens January 9 with the legendary soul and gospel singer, the Reverend Al Green, who made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with hits like Let’s Stay Together and Take Me to the River. More than 50 events will take place around Sydney including the stage adaptation of the award winning graphic novel The Arrival by Australian illustrator Shaun Tan. Performed by New Zealand’s Red Leap Theatre this surreal, dream-like tale of migration depicting life in a land of indecipherable languages and customs, flying ships, curious animals, bizarre foods will sure to enchant. To celebrate the Adelaide Festival's 50th anniversary a programme of over 250 performances, events and exhibitions in 33 venues will take place from February 26 to March 14 2010. This year audiences will “be moved and affected, challenged, and made to laugh, cry and feel… this is the mysterious thread that binds an artist to their audience,” says Festival director Paul Grabowsky.
