Q & A with Patrick Materman, Chief Winemaker for Brancott Estate
MiNDFOOD speaks to Patrick Materman, the Chief Winemaker for New Zealand's leading wine producer Brancott Estate, about their partnership with World of Wearable Arts and what to expect at this year's WOW® Awards Show.

When did Brancott Estate get involved with the World of WearableArt Awards?

Brancott Estate (formerly Montana) became the naming rights sponsor of WOW in 1998 when the event was held in Nelson. The event was called the Montana New Zealand Wearable Art Awards. We are proud to have had a fourteen-year partnership so far with an event that has been described by Tourism New Zealand as “exemplifying New Zealand at its creative, innovative best.”

Where did the name WOW come from?

In 2000, New Zealand WearableArt Ltd assembled a management team to grow the event. We instigated the workshop held at the Brancott Estate visitor centre in Blenheim, with the New Zealand Wearable Art team and external facilitation, to come up with the “World of WearableArt™” brand and WOW® brands.

The event is held in Wellington now, when did it move from Nelson?

The Brancott Estate WOW® Awards Show moved to Wellington in 2005 to enable the event to grow both commercially and creatively.  There is nothing quite like it around the world and New Zealanders should all be proud to have this incomparable world-class event on local soil.

Why leading New Zealand wine brand Brancott Estate?

Brancott Estate is extremely proud to support the Brancott Estate WOW® Awards Show and continue to share in WOW’s vision and passion to deliver a powerful and unique event that is experienced by nearly 50,000 people each show season.  Brancott Estate, like the World of WearableArt™, is a pioneer of innovation, like with our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, both on the local and international stage and both organisations continue to push the boundaries to deliver experiences that put them at the forefront of their respective fields. This innovative spirit is the essence of the Brancott Estate WOW® Awards Show, as every year the show breaks new ground.

Will you be going to this year's show?

Luckily enough I will be and I’m looking forward to it. If it was anything at all like last year I won’t be able to stop saying ‘WOW’ literally. It’s a definite feast for the eyes and imagination with boundless creativity – a complete extravaganza!
